COMMITMENT
Sasol is committed to managing air quality
impacts responsibly and in an integrated
manner that supports long-term value creation and
sustainable business performance. Sasol seeks
synergies between environmental stewardship and
operational resilience, while maintaining transparent
and constructive engagement with regulators,
communities and other stakeholders.
GROUP
APPROACH
Sasol’s Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) governance framework underpins disciplined air quality
management across the Group through defined governance structures, technical standards and specialised
capability. A risk-based approach guides prioritisation of interventions and capital allocation, supported
by sustained investment in emissions abatement, infrastructure, monitoring, and reporting systems. This
approach strengthens environmental performance, resilience and the quality of decision-useful information.
PROGRAMMES AND PERFORMANCE
Sasol’s air quality context
Sasol’s Southern African Operations are
primarily based on coal and natural gas
feedstocks, while Natref processes crude
oil. International Operations utilise gas
and oil derivatives and natural aluminium.
These inherent process characteristics
result in complex emissions profiles that
require targeted and technically robust
management approaches. Air quality
impacts are managed through specialised
engineering capability, fit-for-purpose
technologies and improvement practices,
supporting operational efficiency and
emissions reduction.
Regulatory developments
South Africa’s air quality regulatory
framework continued to evolve during
the reporting period, increasing both
compliance complexity and implications
for the company’s integrated operations.
The revised Highveld Priority Area Air
Quality Management Plan was gazetted,
introducing strengthened emission
reduction requirements for both Sasol
Mining and Secunda Operations.
For more detail, refer to the Environmental
Compliance section on pages 108 – 110
SASOL INTEGRATED REPORT 2026
Revised plans for the Vaal Triangle and
Waterberg-Bojanala Priority Areas
remain in progress, reflecting a shift
toward optimised regional air quality
management. Proposed amendments to
listed activities and emission standards,
together with the promulgation of the
National Dust Management Control
Regulations, further strengthen regulatory
expectations relating to emissions control
and fugitive dust management.
These developments require ongoing
adaptation of operational facilities,
infrastructure and practices, as well
as complex investment planning and
emissions management systems. They
reinforce the need for robust governance,
data integrity, strong technical capability
and transparent engagement with
regulators to enable sustained compliance
and long-term business continuity.
Engaging with authorities
During the reporting period, Sasolburg,
Secunda, and Natref Operations, as well
as the Regional Operations and Asset
Services (ROAS), maintained routine
engagement with national, provincial
102
and local environmental authorities
through inspections, regulatory
forums and licence-related reporting
processes. Sasolburg and Secunda
also participated in Environmental
Management Inspectorate multienvironmental media inspections.
Sasol Mozambique completed the FY25
ambient air monitoring submission to the
Ministry of Agriculture, Environment and
Fisheries. The submission was accepted,
with no further immediate action required,
and future engagement will continue
through routine reporting obligations.
For further details, see the environmental compliance
section on pages 108 – 110
Engaging with communities
During the reporting period, Secunda,
Sasolburg, including Natref and ROAS
Operations maintained structured
and ongoing stakeholder engagement
through established processes. Formal
engagements and public consultations
were conducted, supporting continuous
dialogue and transparency.
