KEY ACHIEVEMENTS
The reporting period reflects continued
operational stabilisation and optimisation
of air quality management across Sasol’s
operations, with a focus on improved monitoring
capability, system modernisation and enhanced
environmental data visibility supported by structured
operational practices.
Sasolburg and Natref Operations remained focused
on sustaining stable operations in line with regulatory
requirements. In addition Natref continued progressing
its transition towards a hybrid refinery configuration,
underpinned by the planned introduction of lower sulphur
crude feedstocks, which is expected to deliver a material
reduction in sulphur dioxide emissions over time. Within
Mining Operations, no fallout dust exceedances were
recorded year-to-date, reflecting sustained effectiveness
of dust control measures and operational discipline.
At the Secunda Operations, a key milestone was the
migration from a legacy environmental information
system to a cloud-based air quality dashboard, enabling
improved reliability and enabling adherence to more
stringent reporting requirements of stack emissions
and meteorological conditions. The system strengthened
internal environmental oversight, supported more
informed decision-making and facilitated more proactive
engagement on local air quality performance. Capability
was further enhanced through targeted upskilling
in air quality monitoring and data interpretation. At
ROAS, air quality performance was supported through
a structured and consistently applied monthly and
quarterly monitoring programme.
Sasol’s air quality management approach
is underpinned by sustained capital
investment, operational discipline
and ongoing optimisation across the
value chain. Secunda Operations
has delivered a large-scale air quality
improvement programme supported
by significant investment in emission
reduction initiatives, including the
decommissioning of legacy emission
sources and the installation of enhanced
abatement technologies across multiple
production units, resulting in sustained
reductions in key pollutants relative
to the 2019 baseline and reinforcing
Sasol’s commitment to ambient air
quality improvements.
At Sasolburg and Natref Operations,
air quality performance is improved by
ongoing process optimisation and system
enhancements. These include coal
blending initiatives at Sasolburg and the
installation of three low carbon boilers
at Natref.
of abatement systems across key
pollutants at the Ekandustria Operations.
Mozambique Operations implement a
comprehensive environmental monitoring
programme across operational facilities,
including the Central Processing Facility
and surrounding areas.
Mining Operations apply integrated dust
management measures across material
handling, haul roads and processing
activities, including water-based
suppression systems and engineered
containment solutions such as covered
and partially enclosed conveyors.
ROAS maintains structured monitoring
and control of atmospheric emissions
supported by stable performance
Collectively, these interventions
demonstrate a coordinated, continuous
approach to compliant air quality
management across all operations,
supported by capital investment,
engineered controls and disciplined
operational execution, reinforcing
performance across the natural,
manufactured, human and financial
capitals.
Atmospheric emissions (kt)
2026
2025
Particulate Matter (Fly-ash)
3,56
4,67
COMMENTARY
Fly ash emissions decreased in both Secunda (20%) and Sasolburg (54%), driven
by improved abatement performance, full electrostatic precipitator programme
implementation and slightly lower coal throughput.
Nitrogen Oxides (NOX)
89,41
92,90
Secunda Operations NOX emissions increased due to the expansion of the
reporting boundary to include all significant sources. The increase was offset by a
decrease of 7% at boiler operations. SNO emissions decreased by 65% following full
implementation of the low-NOX burner programme and slightly lower coal throughput.
Sulphur Oxides (SOX)
152,74
138,72
Secunda Operations SO2 emissions increased by 19% due to higher coal throughput
and increased sulphur content in coal, while SNO emissions decreased by 34%
following full implementation of the sulphur blending model and slightly lower coal
throughput.
Research activities continued to support operational air
quality management through ongoing development of
monitoring approaches and analytical capability.
