COMMITMENT
Sasol is committed to the responsible use of
water resources and to preventing pollution and
environmental degradation by exercising its duty
of care and meeting its regulatory obligations in this
regard. Water is a precious resource essential to
Sasol’s operations and processes.
GROUP
APPROACH
Water security remains a material consideration for the business, particularly given the water-stressed
contexts in which the South African Operations are located. Sasol’s approach therefore extends beyond
operational boundaries. Sasol actively collaborates with municipalities, regulators, and other stakeholders to
address shared water challenges at a catchment level. Through participation in integrated water resource
management initiatives, Sasol contributes to enhancing coordination and resilience in local water systems
while advancing its own sustainability objectives. This approach is aligned with global frameworks and the
United Nations Global Compact CEO Water Mandate, of which Sasol is a signatory. These frameworks
provide a structured foundation for identifying, assessing, and responding to water-related risks and
opportunities across the value chain.
HIGHLIGHTS
PROGRAMMES
Research and Technology
Introduced new voluntary
water targets for South African
Operations for FY26 to FY30.
Maintained CDP
water score of
B.
Water and utilities engineering capability development
Innovation
To strengthen internal capability and water stewardship, Sasol implemented
a three-day Water and Utilities Management training programme for
engineering personnel across SO, Sasolburg and Natref. The programme
covered key areas including water and salt management, treatment
processes, desalination, bioprocessing, and cooling-water management,
supporting improved water reuse, treatment efficiency, and utility-water risk
management across operations.
Sasol implemented an initiative to divert a high-organic Phenosolvan
waste stream from incineration to biological treatment, improving waste
and emissions management. An added benefit is the recovery and reuse
of treated water as process cooling water, reducing freshwater demand
and supporting circular water management through existing bioprocessing
infrastructure.
