Mining Operations
It was previously reported that
Sasol Coal Supply was awaiting
its renewed WUL, which was
issued in January 2026.
Reportable incidents at
Sasol’s Mining Operations
comprised water-related
and environmental-control
deviations, including a
temporary coal stockpile
established within a 500m
wetland buffer, servicewater pipeline leaks/loss of
containment events, overflow
events linked to infrastructure
and heavy rain, a spillage from a
storage bund due to valve failure
and bund integrity gaps, and
project laydown/clearing. These
incidents were all investigated to
ensure that adequate corrective
and preventative measures have
been implemented.
The DWS conducted compliance
monitoring inspections
at the Shondoni Colliery
during October 2025 and
at the Bosjesspruit Colliery
during November 2025. No
administrative enforcement
actions were taken following
these inspections.

Secunda Operations
The Secunda Operations continue
to manage compliance challenges
associated with the renewed WUL
(issued 14 November 2023), including
effluent dam barrier control requirements
and implementation timelines through
an amendment application. A riskbased remedial action plan was
finalised and submitted to the DWS at
the end May 2026 for approval amid
the pending amendment application.
A response is awaited.
An incident occurred following the
replacement of the emergency valve
at Fine Ash Dam 6 and involved the
intermittent loss of containment. Sasol
managed the incident as a significant
environmental incident in accordance
with its internal and applicable regulatory
requirements, including reporting the
incident to the relevant authorities.
Through monitoring, it was established
that dams on neighbouring properties were
impacted. Remedial actions have since
been undertaken to address the impacts.
On 18 February 2026, the Secunda
Operations engaged with the DWS’s
Regional Office regarding the potential
release of clear ash effluent to aid with
positive water balance management at the
Secunda Operations. This was followed by a
subsequent site visit from the DWS to assess
Sasol’s management of Fine Ash Dam 6
in accordance with the provisions of the
Dam Safety Regulations. On request by the
DWS, Sasol submitted a detailed operational
plan. Additionally, on 19 February 2026,
the Secunda Operations met with officials
from the Department of Agriculture, Rural
Development, Land and Environmental Affairs
in Mpumalanga regarding a Section 30
application in terms of NEMA to commence
with listed activities amid an emergency
associated with managing the positive
water balance challenges at the Secunda
Operations. A Section 30A directive was
received on 16 April 2026 to conduct listed
activities related to necessary interventions
to address the risks associated with the
positive water balance.
SASOL INTEGRATED REPORT 2026
109
Environmental complaints managed by the Secunda
Operations, included reports on sulphur odours
which was investigated and reported to the National
Air Quality Officer.
The EMI conducted an inspection on 21 and
22 April 2026 at the Secunda Synfuels Operations.
The report is awaited.
Sasol instituted legal proceedings in the High Court
on 19 September 2025 with the primary objective
of seeking regulatory clarity. The declaratory
order is sought to clarify whether the 40% target
in the Highveld Priority Area (HPA) Air Quality
Management Plan is an industry wide target which
each impacted industry emitter must contribute
towards as opposed to a reduction target for
individual emitters. In the event that the court finds
that the 40% target is binding on individual emitters,
Sasol is seeking a review and setting aside of the
HPA as alternative relief included in the application.
Sasol did, however, submit environmental reduction
management plans as required (ERMPs) for its
Secunda Operations and its Mining Operations in
September 2025. The ERMP for Sasol Mining has
been approved and an outcome on the ERMP for
the Secunda Operations is awaited.
