Sustainable use of plastics
Sasol acknowledges that plastic waste leakage into the environment is a concern, is unacceptable and
wants to make a meaningful impact by:
COMMITMENT
Sasol commits to having a meaningful impact
on plastic waste leakage into the environment
through value-chain collaboration on projects that
contribute to a circular economy.
GROUP
APPROACH
• Executing its plastics sustainability approach through impact projects, innovation, education
and collaboration
• Collaborating in the value chain on projects and initiatives that promote and develop circularity
• Working with the government, relevant industry stakeholders and associations to maximise the
impact of Sasol’s contribution
PROGRAMMES AND PERFORMANCE
Partnerships
Packa-Ching is a mobile recycling
initiative by Polyco that incentivises
recycling in low-income and informal
communities through cash payments for
recyclable waste. Sasol has supported
the programme since 2019. Since
inception, the initiative has created an
estimated 270 jobs. A new agreement,
effective to September 2029, extends
Sasol’s support and expands the
programme to include community
clean-up and awareness initiatives.
In FY26, existing Packa-Ching
units collected
11,0 million kilograms of
recyclables, generating
R18,2 million in income
for 1 933 households.
Sasol is a member of the Alliance to End
Plastic Waste (AEPW), a global nonprofit organisation established in 2019 by
leading companies across the plastics and
consumer goods value chain to eliminate
plastic waste in the environment. Sasol
plays a leadership role in the AEPW
South Africa Country Programme, both
as a funding partner and as co-chair
of the Programme Advisory Group.
The programme continues to scale its
impact, in FY26, it reduced 32,8 million
kilograms of unmanaged plastic waste
and valorised 27,3 million kilograms
through projects implemented
nationwide.
Sasol subscribes to the SA Plastics
Pact, a platform to stimulate innovation,

barriers and drive investment into
circularity. Sasol is actively involved
in specific polyolefins workstreams,
as these are closely related to Sasol’s
core business.
Plastics recovery programme
Sasol’s Plastics Recovery Programme
is ongoing and continuing to support
the reduction of plastic pollution by
developing a more circular value chain
for plastics. This includes collection and
sorting, mechanical recycling, advanced
recycling and/or recovery of plastic
waste. The programme follows a shared
value approach with consideration that
Sasol’s participation will yield positive
economic returns.
Sasol continues to advance development
at the Polymer Technology Services
Centre (PTSC) to unlock new
applications and market opportunities
for post-consumer recyclate (PCR), with
a particular focus on polyolefins, which
account for ~60% of South Africa’s
plastics demand. The business has
also achieved ISCC certification for the
Secunda Catalytic Cracker, enabling
the conversion of bio-based and circular
feedstocks into sustainable ethylene
and propylene, and creating a pathway
to produce virgin quality sustainable
polymer resin locally.

International Legally Binding
Instrument (ILBI) on Plastics Pollution
UN member states agreed in March 2022
to develop a legally binding treaty on
plastic pollution (ILBI), mandated to the
Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee
(INC). After INC 5.2 in August 2025 failed to
reach consensus on the treaty text, a follow
up session (INC 5.3) in February 2026
focused only on governance. Deep divisions
over consensus versus voting shaped
proceedings, and Chile was elected Chair
after a two round ballot. While leadership was
restored, the process remains fragmented,
with momentum now dependent on progress
at INC 5.4.
Despite current global fragmentation, Sasol
continues to collaborate with governments,
industry bodies and stakeholders to support
the development of an effective, globally
aligned ILBI to end plastic pollution. Sasol
recognises that plastic pollution is a global
challenge requiring coordinated action, and
remain committed to promoting responsible
use of plastics across their lifecycle. While
plastics play a critical role in areas such as
food security, healthcare and energy, they
should never leak into the environment.
Ending plastic pollution is therefore a priority,
and Sasol supports an ILBI that advances
sustainable development while accelerating
the transition to a circular plastics economy.
