SOCIAL – LABOUR CONTINUED
Occupational safety and HSI programme continued
Safety is a Group top priority and risk, which is managed
by meeting the requirements in Sasol’s enterprise
risk management (ERM) framework, embedding the
company’s HSI Programme and the One Sasol SHE
Excellence approach. The focus remains to prevent
HSIs and manage the top priorities and Group risk.
For more information on Group Risks, please refer to pages 21 – 32
Sasol’s Humanising Safety efforts are underpinned by
two core values: Be Safe and Be Caring. These values
reflect the company’s commitment to the wellbeing of
employees and service providers, a deep understanding
of the underlying causes of incidents, and consistently
high safety standards, with the goal of ensuring that
everyone returns home safely every day.
High risk activities are prioritised and focused upon from
a planning, risk verification and assurance perspective,
with a concerted effort to prevent HSIs. Through
leveraging existing Operational Excellence (OE) and
existing safety meetings dialogue and activities to
support risk reduction are concluded.
To support leadership’s ability, promote a safe culture
and to act upon workplace concerns, signs and signals
regular behaviour transformation (BT) interventions are
applied in the workplace focused on listening strategies
to unearth issues of concern to drive barrier removal.
A high number of high risk activities are managed by
Service Providers, to support improved risk management
on activities an approach of aligning accountabilities and
increased ownership from the organisations a bespoke
accountabilities model is piloted. Sasol still maintains a
critical view through assurance on activities managed by
the service providers.
Once proactive themes and trends are identified,
corrective actions are managed with greater focus and
urgency. This is supported by improved visibility through
dashboards, increased awareness, and direct leadership
reinforcement of clear, consistent safety expectations.

Hospitalisations
Tragically, two fatalities occurred in FY26 at Secunda
Thubelisha Colliery and Power Station East plant, involving
a fall of ground and a fall from height, respectively.
Both incidents were investigated in accordance with
the HSI protocol. Each high-severity incident, fatality, HSI
or potential HSI is subject to a detailed investigation to
determine direct and root causes, as well as underlying
organisational, workplace, and individual factors.
Corrective actions are identified, implemented, tracked,
and verified through established assurance processes,
including interventions across climate and culture,
engineering controls, and behaviour-based improvements.
The number of hospitalisations decreased from 65 to 40
on the efforts of understanding high severity incidents
and improving the hierarchy of control. A number of these
hospitalisations were precautionary or for less severe
treatment, and the overall severity profile of hospital
injuries improved, with fewer higher-consequence
cases recorded. Also note that hospitalisation figures now
exclude individuals admitted solely for observation.
The HSI Prevention Programme is
applied across the Sasol Group, in
FY26 a refined HSI Standard has
been defined which further supports
the programme as it sets the
minimum, group wide requirements
to prevent incidents with the potential
for severe or catastrophic harm
across all Sasol Operations.
It provides a single, consistent
framework, replacing all previous
HSI-related standards and toolkits,
aligned with the One Sasol SHE
Excellence approach and ISO 9001,
14001 and 45001 Standards.
The standard is enabled through
five integrated enablers: Leadership
Direction; HSI Risk Exposure
Awareness and Management;
Operational Control; Data-driven
Intelligence and Action Orientation;
and Measurement of Effectiveness.
These enablers embed HSI
prevention into daily operations
through leadership routines,
operational controls, structured
supervision, and clear accountability
at all levels.
The standard is applied through
Sasol’s Operations Rhythm and
Assurance (ORA), using risk profiles,
critical control verification, and
leading and lagging indicators to
guide assurance and intervention.
By integrating risk intelligence,
disciplined execution and visible
leadership, the standard shifts HSI
prevention from compliance to “the
way we work,” supporting Sasol’s
journey to sustainable Zero Harm.
FY27 FOCUS
Sasol will advance its Zero Harm philosophy by embedding
the HSI prevention standard, strengthening accountability
Leadership assurance and a sustained focus on critical
control effectiveness and behavioural drivers have
enabled the RCR to reduce from 0,25 to 0,21.

While the LWDCR decreased slightly to 0,11 from 0,13
this trend reflects heightened visibility and management
of lower-severity injuries, supporting the effectiveness of
the HSI Programme and continued strengthening of the
hierarchy of controls for high-risk activities.
leadership assurance frameworks and the adoption of
categories. The focus on business sustainability, operational
stability, and continual improvement will be supported by
new safety technologies, ensuring resilient operations and
safeguarding all who contribute to the company’s success.
* A Category 1 LWDC is an injury where the injury sustained has a low probability of a fatal or life-altering outcome. A Category 2 LWDC is an injury where the outcome of the injury is variable and influenced by other comorbid factors. A Category 3 LWDC is an injury where the injury sustained has a high
probability of a fatal or life-altering outcome.
